WHY AIRBORNE WIND ENERGY?

1.2 Billion People Are Without Access To Electricity.  That’s a staggering number.

In response to this problem, many countries, including the US, are forming energy policies that will focus on the increased development of renewable energy technologies.  AWE, known as Airborne Wind Energy, is one such technology that is gaining recognition as an alternative renewable source for power generation because winds at altitude are consistent and accessible across the globe.

AWE allows us to tap into wind resources that are not feasible for traditional systems. Airborne wind has an advantage over those traditional wind turbines because the AWE system can reach higher altitudes thus accessing more reliable winds and producing up to 4X more power.  AWE technology can be portable which alleviates the need for a concrete base, a tower, and a significant capital investment in the overall traditional system.  AWE isn’t a new concept but is now feasible due to advancements in composite materials and GPS guided instrumentation.

 

HOW IT WORKS?

eWind is developing a cost-effective airborne wind energy system (AWES) – a wind energy generation system that uses flying drones to access more consistent, reliable winds at higher altitudes than those reached by traditional wind turbines.  The drones fly within the wind, pull on a tether, and turn a generator on the ground to produce electricity.

Our first generation system is scaled for use on farms and will produce 10kW (peak) and 40,000 kWh annually (average).  That’s enough for an entire farming operation or about 5 American homes all from one device that fits on the back of a pickup truck!  We are currently in the product development and testing stage.

Living without electricity is a challenge.

Many people, particularly children have to do their homework in the dark or by candlelight. Our goal is to provide a solution for bringing not only light to people but a means to improve their quality of life.
Access to power means they can prepare meals on a real stove, have powered water pumps for drinking water or crop irrigation, have refrigeration, charge cell phones, etc.
Basically, have the amenities the rest of the world enjoys.  Reliance on fossil fuel based sources is reduced, thus improving the carbon footprint.

Clean energy is an investment in health.

Toxic by-products are released when burning fossil fuel sources.  This not only creates a carbon footprint but also contributes to greenhouse emissions. These noxious fumes create a myriad of health issues.
Over time, exposure leads to many diseases, predominantly severe respiratory illnesses.  Open flames and areas without proper ventilation increase the chance of fires.  A clean renewable source of energy greatly reduces health and environmental issues.

Energy facilitates education.

We’ve all witnessed an increase in natural disasters in recent years, that have created catastrophic results worldwide.  Current sources of electrical supply means have been compromised and rendered inoperable after a natural disaster has occurred.
Our system is designed to be portable allowing installation anywhere in the world there is access to airspace.  An established grid is not necessary for our system to operate. For remote areas, the entire is air-dropped onsite and set up to generate power within hours.
The eWind TED is appropriate for refugee camps, island nations, remote areas where current wind/solar systems are not feasible, military applications, and other situations where the infrastructure is gone or has been compromised.
